Personal:
Born in Reykjavík in 1966. Married to Hrafnhildur Stefánsdóttir. They have five children and live in Seltjarnarnes.
Education:
Cand. oecon. degree in Business Administration from the University of Iceland, 1990.
M.A. 1991, M.Phil. 1994 and Ph.D. 1997 in Economics from Yale University.
Employment:
Journalist at the newspaper Morgunblaðið, during the summers of 1986 until 1990.
Part-time instructor in Economics at Menntaskólinn við Sund (high school) 1988 until 1990.
Teaching assistant at Yale University 1992 until 1995.
Researcher at the Institute of Economics Studies and lecturer at the University of Iceland from 1996 until 1998. Adjunct professor 1997 until 1998. Associate professor at the Department of Business Administration since 1998.
Minister of Business Affairs from February 1, 2009.

University of Iceland
Head of the Department of Business Administration at the University of Iceland 2000-2004. Dean of the Faculty of Economics and Business Administration from 2004 until 2007.
Chair of the board overseeing the University endowment since 2001.

Vice-chair of the board of Kaupás (operates several retail chains) from 2000 until 2003. Member of the board of Sjúkrahúsapótekið (the pharmaceutical sector of the main hospitals in Iceland) from 2001 until 2005.
